Forthright has surprisingly fast combat. Scene 4 was over pretty quickly, which left scene 5 to basically cover the "denouement." Not exactly what I expected, but I appreciate games that don't turn combat into 30 to 45 minute slogs. I think I might have to kick it around a little more for SGAM.

One thing i really like is the option in Mythic of creating unexpected scenes, altered scenes and so forth, when you are moving from one scene to the next.
I'd like something a bit more robust than Mythics option for it though (which just has the choices of Altered or Interrupted scenes).
Any suggestions?
I really really like the "CRGE" (Conjectural roleplaying gm emulator) but it doesn't seem to have anything like this.

How many of you use a full-blown rule system to play, versus just using the oracle of choice to resolve skill questions?

In other words, if using, say Mythic, just ask another question of "Does my Ranger track the villains successfully?"
(Yes, Im aware that this is basically how the full Mythic RPG functions but I'm thinking of not even using that much)

Continuing with my Bolt Action game, things have come to a show down inside the Germans half. The Soviets looked like they might break through, but the German tank managed to take down the Soviets armor in a single shot.

The spear tip unit is now pinned down (6 pins total) in the center of the board. In the photos the white die is the number of pins, blue die are morale penalties.
The Soviets did manage to stop a sneaky German unit from skirting the lower edge of the map.
I also put in some place holder Lego buildings as I work out my scaling. I've determined that a brick is about 3.5' tall, and is 3' wide. Now I can start designing some terrain features.

Hanson finally gets a break in her case, as she thwarts an attempted assassination.
And with this post, I'm putting "A Lonely Hope" on hiatus as I get ready for Solo Gaming Appreciation Month. I'm still not sure what I'm going to play for it, but I know I want to take a break from Vampire, and "modern supernatural" games in general.
For those who have been reading along, I'd like to ask a few questions, if I may. For this AP, I've been trying out a couple of new tools and a new format style.
Does the format style of mechanics/narrative/other thoughts work? Are there any improvements you would like to see? If you've read any of my older ones, do you prefer the more rigid style, or the "old school" free form style?
I'm using a couple of different tools and mechanics. Is this understandable? Is it clear which tool I'm using, why I'm using it, and how it's impacting the game?
Any other feedback? I'm always striving to not only challenge myself with my Solo gaming, but also with my Actual Play reports, and would greatly appreciate any comments or observations, both positive and negative.
Thanks, and see you all for #SGAM2017!

I've been reading some Exalted lately, and pondering how to play a solo game at a similarly high-powered level. The system in question is probably far too crunchy to run quickly, like White Wolf on steroids.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried to solo Sine Nomine's Godbound, perhaps? That system seems to offer some of the "feel," of Exalted without the baroque game mechanics. More generally, how high-powered do folks run their games?

Posting the results of my first real adventure hoping for feedback on how I can maybe do things better. Any suggestions let me know!
I did actually enjoy it a lot the way I did it but with experience I know comes shortcuts to make it even a more enjoyable experience.

I had today off, with no pressing errands or to-do list items. So it was a productive day for soloing Bolt Action. And I got to put my long standing concept for minimalist Lego WW2 to the test. I even committed Lego-sin and glued the little guys to their bases. I've said it before but the best part of solo gaming, rpg and wargames alike, is doing it as you like without the need to talk anyone else around.

The game has been a bit of a stand still. The Germans are defending a bridge, and I've been having trouble pushing though the front line. Dice rolls have been abysmal for both sides, and I've been forced to pull back and regroup. Additionally, both forces need to hold some forces in reserve to prevent enemy troops from crossing the field and leaving the table. The Soviets numbers haven't been as useful as I'd hoped.
If I manage to finish this skirmish it may expand into a campaign.

Scene 3. Now with more Easter Eggs. I also tweak my home rules a tiny bit after my purchase of Forthright, a d20 take on PbtA resolution. I like it overall, though I naturally have some issues with it. At this rate, I may as well start doing reviews. xD

You can support Zack's family and pick up the UNE here: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/134163/UNE-The-Universal-NPC-Emulator-rev (PWYW)

After a few weeks offline (notebook crash), I have now posted the end of my first Stay Frosty game.
Here are a couple of questions for Casey G.:
1. what happens if Tension goes above 6? I have ignored further Tension increments, but I guess the alternative is that Tension automatically explodes! if it reaches 7
2. characters go apeshit if they drop to 0 hp when tension explodes. But what happens to a character that already is at 0 hp and fails the Tension Explodes save? I guess he goes apeshit as well
I would like to play more of this format during SGAM, but I don't know yet if I will have time. I could extend the Danger Die table, in particular to detail what the clues / signs are like and include encounters with recurring NPCs: that could be fun, add some more narrative to the bug fights, and I could use Zach Best's UNE to generate the NPCs.

While I still consider what to do with Heroquest, I've posted another Index Card RPG session set in Karameikos and likely leading into Ravenloft. The post is lengthy because I've noted just about every decision I made to kind of see what takes place behind the scenes.

I started a new campagin in Dungeon Worlds today, as I mentioned in a separate post to share the new linchpin app in my solo system. I'm also using the Perilous Wilds source book to add to the exploration tool kit. These rules have proven a fair bit of fun and very solo friendly with only having the players roll as well as having the Moves fairly well defined as to what happens on success, partial success, or failure.

It's a basic dungeon crawl campaign with a Fighter, Ranger, Thief, and Wizard heading off into the wilds in an attempt to earn enough through Relic Hunting to buy their way off the Australia-inspired penal colony.
I also have returned to using my Story Cubes. I roll all of them at once and line them up. Then I work my way through them as I run into the need for inspiration.
I'm using an app called Chat Mapper for my solo Dungeon World game, and I've been enjoying it quite a bit. It's intended to map out branching dialogue for video games, but I'm using it to chronicle my GM and Party in a way that is organized. I run the current string left to right and the chronology flows top to bottom. I'll add a screenshot of my curent game below. The app is free for non-commercial use. Here's the link: http://www.chatmapper.com/

HUMAN ORACLE QUESTION!
HUMAN ORACLE QUESTION!
At the end of my last post, Hanson was ready to set off to get more information. The scene seed is "Trick an Actor into revealing a Clue." At this point, her best point of reference is Cora, and who she is working for. BUT, other leads could be "who has a grudge against Dona (the religious revivalist) and/or Blaine (Dona's "patron")?" Or, something else entirely.
So, help me out!
Who should the "Actor" be? Is he a human? Vampire? Something else entirely?
What information MIGHT he have for Hanson?
Why won't he reveal it willingly OR for a bribe?
Where do they meet? A hot and happening nightclub? Swanky gallery opening? Down by the docks? Somewhere less cliche?
Does Hanson know anything about this guy (or girl)? Does she know any kind of "trick" that MIGHT work? Whatever is is, it should be difficult to pull off, and Hanson's best Social Attribute is her Appearance, if that helps any.
Anything else interesting that could happen?
Oracle me!

My perfect solo roleplaying tool would...
1. Effortlessly generate content for ALL game master responses.
2. Generate content that requires little to no interpretation.
3. Generate content that is easy to interpret (if interpretation is needed at all).
4. Generate content that has as few alternate interpretations as possible (if interpretation is needed at all). My ideal number of possible interpretations for generated content is ONE, by the way.
5. Generate content that fits the context (or at least easily leads to an interpretation that fits).

Here's the first proper scene for my new Solo play.
There's a LOT of mechanics in this play through. First off, I'm using Vampire as my core rules, which is probably best described as "Medium Crunch." Secondly, I'm a variety of tools for this--Mythic, Scarlet Heroes, and Covetous Poets Adventure Creator. Even still, I think it's working decently well to tell a potentially interesting story.
I'm also experimenting with a different method of formatting my posts, dividing between Narrative, Raw Mechanics, and Other. Hopefully it makes things a little more understandable.

Below is the first post of my new Solo play. This is just the prologue, so nothing terribly interesting happens in this session. I had been fighting with some formatting issues and decided to go "crude and messy" over "neat and clean" just to get this done so I could actually move on to the game.

This is my all-time favorite roleplaying game. It's more organized and streamlined compared to the first edition. To play all you need is the four free files, available at the boardgamegeek link below. It takes maybe 20 to 30 minutes to learn the rules initially, and after that you're good to go.
There is more replay value in this game than in almost any other. You have to check it out.

I’ve been spending a lot of time playing “OSR” games recently. Thinking about trying something different: Heroquest 2.
I’ve owned Heroquest for eight(?) years and never got around to playing it. Just like Al Qadim. Might do that next month. To get in the spirit of Halloween, I may test run Heroquest with Pathfinder’s Rule of Fear (cheaply available via Humble Bundle at https://www.humblebundle.com/books/pathfinder-worldscape-ultimate-book-bundle).
Anyone with Heroquest experience have supplemental recommendations? I bought HQ: Glorantha (heard it was easier to understand than 2E). Honestly, I never gave HQ2 a try because I couldn’t get the Keywords until recently.

Here's a fun mini game I've been using to add some spontaneity and surprise to conversations with NPCs. You're character is allowed to say anything on his side of the conversation, but the NPC must use a word randomly rolled from this list of 100 common nouns during his/her turn. This list is tuned for a medieval fantasy setting, but could easily be tweaked for any setting.

My character is in the Church of the Sun and is seeking the Head Priest in his quest for a holy artifact. He encounters a young man in robes walking hurriedly past.
PC: Excuse me good sir. I seek the leader of this temple.
NPC: [15: student] Yes, I am a student of his, may I ask why it is you seek Elder James?
PC: I'm on a quest given by the King himself. It is urgent and I must speak with him. He may hold crucial information.
NPC: [45: book] My master will often be found with in a book in his hand. I would hazard a guess that he is in the library.
PC: Thank you. Can you tell me where I might find the library?
NPC [37: area] The library is in the northern part of the temple. Near the garden area.
PC: Thank you again my friend.
I then hurry off to the library.

I just discovered this wonderful place... I'm stuck in a sort of RPG hell without a group to play with, so I'm poking around to see all the awesome going on in here...

While I'm here, I bullet journal. I've designed an RPG to use with your bullet journal (Original version here> http://www.emeraldspecter.com/bujorpg-the-bullet-journal-role-playing-game/ and the new version BETA here> http://www.emeraldspecter.com/bujorpg-2-open-beta/). It is probably THE definition of solo RPG, though I've combined it with self improvement to give it a little "real world XP."
Back to solo roleplaying: has anyone got a Star Trek / space opera style game (like maybe something similar to the Expanse) they are using as a base system? I've been itching to dive into a space story.

Tuesday's are always the worst, and here's one more reason why. A longtime member of the gaming community, Zach Best, just passed away.
Zach was an innovative designer who wrote such books as UNE, BOLD and more. His work was geared towards solo role-playing, and in that group he was much respected.
Zach had esophageal cancer, which he fought for a long tome before it took him last night. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Back in August you members of the gaming community opened your hearts to the Best family by supporting a bundle on Drivethrurpg. The bundle was driven by sales of Zach's Book, a PDF whose sales go entirely to Zach's family.
The bundle was amazing. It featured many titles from a lot of publishers, both large and small. The bundle managed to make it and stay at the number two spot on drive-thru RPG for a very long time. Wow that bundle is no longer offered, Zach's Book remains up for sale. It is now available at any price so you can choose to pay as little or as much as you like to support Zach's family. I am going to leave it up for sale indefinitely. All proceeds go directly to Zach's family.
Thank you all for everything.

Nothing new here for us veterans but I'm happy to see that they cover it. I'm guessing that they have a broad audience and this article might bring some folks to this niche. Unfortunately, they don't mention this community. :-(

So, I made a thing. Some of you had inquired as to how I formatted the actual plays on my blog. The answer is: mostly using WordPress plugins/shortcodes (akin to BBCode, which may be more common).

I happened upon a JavaScript library that allows for defining your own such shortcodes, so I forked it and threw a few AP-specific codes together:
* Wrap your narrative in [story] tags
* Die rolls and the like can be styled, inline or block, with [dice] tags.
* Put the sekruts behind [spoiler] tags that expand and collapse with a click.
The good news is, you can drop it in to most any site that allows you to include JavaScript. The bad news is, it's JavaScript. Some of you may find it useful, and I encourage you to change up the CSS and create your own codes -- it's not terribly difficult if you're familiar with programming at all.
The code is on GitHub here <https://github.com/sdsalyer/ap_shortcodes.js> and I created a Blogger demo site here <https://actualplayformat.blogspot.com/2017/10/apshortcodesjs-demo-page.html> (Todd Rokely, this blog's for you!)
Let me know if you have any issues with it, or if I can help out with defining other shortcodes for you. Cheers!

First, Arcadius actually survived the three rooms. Second, the random encounters definitely assisted, which was kind of interesting. Before I send him into the pit, I need to figure out how his "party" will function.

The results were decent, honestly. I came up with a solid player character, though probably not one I would have created on my own. I always tended to balk at the "vampire cop" trope, but the results are what the results are.

Ophira made it a little further than her predecessor. I made a few adjustments by including Moldvay Basic to guide the dungeon exploration, such as keeping track of turns and rolling for a wandering encounter every two turns. Instead of randomly determining the wandering encounter, I worked with the theme and chose a monster from the Monster Manual, scaling it down to a 1st level encounter.

I think I'll try another character and see how far he or she can make it before moving to another dungeon/setting.

Hello
Hello,
It's my first post on the community. I'm a long time solo player and I feel happy to find another people with the same passion.
I want to share my oracle tool. I'm a poor html/js programmer, the page is very simple, but it's cool enough to entertain myself.
Feel free to use and comment!

Decided to start my first solo roleplaying experience running Fate Accelerated to play Shadowrun. Using Mythic GME to handle the randomness. It's a WIP (and my first time playing with Fate so probably some rules problems as well).

Just finished playing my first game of the Second Edition of the Doctor Who Solitaire Storytelling Game. It's good. It's better than the previous edition, which was previously my favorite tabletop game of all time.
There are four books that you need for play. The first three, Rules, Enemies and Adventures, are already freely available on Boardgamegeek. I got an advanced copy of the fourth, Events, for the purposes of reviewing and posting an actual play.
Those are coming soon.

I just downloaded the pre-release document for Swords & Wizardry Continual Light and was inspired to give it a quick play through. All in all, I really like what it has to offer. Also, it stops levelling exactly where I prefer to: level 7. As usual, I used The Perilous Wilds to generate the dungeon, not that there was much dungeon generation to be made... Probably the shortest actual play I've posted.

Honestly, 1st Ed Vampire has a solid number of random generators, which I love using for my solo games. But, I wanted even more unpredictability, especially in creating characters. So, yeah, here it is.

It's October, and I'm thinking of starting up a new Vampire AP. But, I want to do something a bit different--incorporating Kevin Crawford's work from Scarlet Heroes into the game of personal horror.

I recently read Matthew Finch's "A Quick Primer for Old School Gaming" and found it pretty enlightening, but also somewhat surprising since what seems to be considered "old school" very much coincides with my understandings of solitaire play.
I recently read Matthew Finch's "A Quick Primer for Old School Gaming" and found it pretty enlightening, but also somewhat surprising since what seems to be considered "old school" very much coincides with my understandings of solitaire play.
The same goes for the recent "Principia Apocrypha" that's been floating around (though a bit of overlap with the former) which lists Maze Rats and Macchiato Monsters as influences.
Sophia Brandt recently mentioned LotFP's "Broodmother Skyfortress" (an adventure module) as an influential (and rather recent) work for Game Mastery.
I'm curious as to what other "essential reading" is out there for RPGs at large. I've mostly only read rule books at this point, which aren't always terribly interestering (and often much of the same), so I'm interested in broadening my horizons, so to speak, and I'm looking more towards published adventures, settings and the like, GM and player advice books/articles, or core rules are still fine, too, if you found it interesting.
What have you found inspiring or influential to your play and understanding of RPGs, solitaire or otherwise?

"Thus, we have made the Forbidden Lands rules and the open-world campaign structure very easy to port to other settings. The adventure sites can easily be placed in any other fantasy setting with minor tweaks. All you need is a hexagonal map of the world you want to play in, and you're good to go!"
This game is from the same people that made Mutant League Zero, Coriolis, and Tales from the Loop so the production values are going to be high. At the time of this post there are 27 hours left before it funds:

I updated Heirs of Sea and Shadow, primarily with an eye to reworking the Dynasty system and integrating it with the base rules and advancement.
I also fixed some typos, clarified some rules, and, of course, added in some more tables, including ones for eye and hair color, life events to make heirs more interesting and random, and world events to help keep the world vibrant.
Anyway, not a full edition or version or whatever, just an update to the draft document in progress.

Hey, my solo OMGAM for October is up.
It's been done for a few days but I just wasn't sure I wanted to release it yet. You know when you work on something so much it starts to look weird and lifeless? Yeah, that.
I wanted to write a horror game with lots of flawed characters to die horribly and suddenly, a real meat grinder. What I think I've done instead is prove that horror's not my thing, haha. The best I can manage is action-adventure with some arbitrariness, I'm afraid.
Bullet points. It's 2d6 pbta style. It's has a strong "cycle" structure that's sudden and unforgiving, and limits you to just a few actions per cycle. It has character playbooks and plentiful tables. And an ensemble cast.
My own play through was amusing but not horrific in the least, if you look past the body count, haha.

Just wondering, has anyone tried using the new Star Trek Adventures solo? I've been a big Trek fan since I was a kid, and I feel like it would be a really cool exercise in storytelling.

Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria a few short weeks ago, and is in dire need of humanitarian assistance and relief. We've organized this bundle to provide what help we can. The proceeds for this bundle will be going entirely to GlobalGiving's Puerto Rico and Caribbean Hurricane Relief Fund.
Please take a look, and donate where you can.

This is how Visemar’s story will end. I still plan on running more sessions with him, but it’s like Titanic: I kind of know how it’s going to end. If you’d rather the story unfold organically, quit reading.

For some reason, Visemar’s great-granddaughter’s story wants to be told, so I needed to bridge the two by including this short story. I also don’t know why the Greys’s story wants to be told in first person, but, there it is.

Hi all
Hi all,
I'm running a Fantasy Flight SW solo campaign, and while I have figured out (and enjoyed) how to handle all of the various mechanics, the one thing I haven't solved is the use of Destiny Points. I like what they bring to the game, but I'm not sure they can be used reliably without making them arbitrary.
Just curious if anyone has had any success or feedback with the mechanic in solo play?
On a somewhat related note, Chris Ing of the Silhouette Zero SW podcast (hands down my favorite podcast) reskinned the Maze Rats RPG that is available on DriveThru for Star Wars and called it Womp Rats.
If you're a SW fan, it looks awesome.
I reverse-discovered Maze Rats via Womp Rats, but the original system looks really great.

So here's something interesting I kinda stumbled into: As I mentioned in this post https://plus.google.com/u/0/116770592158650402200/posts/ZUdotHuDyKq

I'm tinkering with an action movie thing. I wanted a chart of stuff for the chief to yell at me in a typical action cop movie. I gathered enough of them I was able to do 2 charts of 1-100. After rolling a few, I decided to see if I could "interact" with it in some way. Hold some kind of conversation. The results were interesting. Very "oracle" like, needing some interpretation, but workable. Example that I just did:
Chief: "You're outta line!"
Me: Me? What the hell did I do? What's wrong now?
Chief: Throws paperweight at me
Me: You think I'M outta line?!? What the hell was that for?!?
Chief: "I'm waiting on a call from the commish."
Me: Oh?
Chief: "Cool it - the shooflies have been buzzing around."
Me: Fine. I got it. Anything else? We through?
Chief: "I'm getting too old for this!"
So, pretty generic, but gives some kind of a feel of a conversation. I wonder if one were to "script" enough different kind of semi-generic, open ended, vague type questions, answers, etc how well it could work as a sort of conversation oracle, not unlike UNE or Mythic? Just a thought. I think I'm going to do a Bad Guy one & see how that goes!
