Demands are top right, no opposing rolls like DW, visual, and oracle in feel and approach.

I want a system where one roll tells the whole story.

  1. I create characters by rolling 6d2 until I run out of successes. This allows for some imagining if one rolls only 1 trait.

I also roll for settings inspiration from Risus Dungeonautica, where places have cliches.

  2. I'm not very visual but I think I understand. You roll between 1 and 6 d2s, depending on how many dice the player brings to the roll, then count the number of successes, then have varying results based on the number of successes? Seems very elegant and like it would be very fast in play?

Have you considered adding another dimension, maybe more info based on which die is higher? Calypso's oracle uses first die high is "and" and second die high is "but", for example.

I liked the idea of ORE but the math and abstracted strategy were never something I could do fast or accurately enough for play.

The only real "one roll" I've seen in play other than that is Crawford's "one roll", where you roll one of each from d6 up and each matches a different chart.

... that's all my thoughts. I mean that pretty literally, haha, pre-tea.

  3. Not familiar with Crawford or Calypso, but would like to take a look. Source or link. But yes, a work in progress and I am considering other dimensions. For now all the dice are the same but hmmm I wonder...

  4. I am not a fan of dice pool systems, but if you want more inspiration about pools of d2s you can also read this minimal rpg (free)

  5. That was interesting, a bit too beer and pretzels for me. Its strange, I have the goals in my head but the mechanics never do it justice.

A system D2 where a single throw can create a picture of success, degree, conclusion and even allow for the forking of story.

Short of working with entrails or oracle bones, I just can't think of it.

  6. I allow myself to suggest humbly Bivius rpg, because it allows with a single d2 to decide all the actions in a fight as in other situations. Perhaps you don't like the the narrative game concept?

  7. I looked at Bivius, clean- concise, to the point and no nonsense. I found using Miso more my style, setting attributes to the character traits like in the window.

  10. I am currently directly inspired by the I Ching' 3 coins, yin and yang, too much yin, etc. But have no idea how to put that with traits, monsters etc. Both the Bean system and Miso RPG are inspiring.

Yeah, I selfish, I just want a minimalist RPG to call my own.

  11. Sophia Brandt yes, your MISO is rather brilliant. I assign dice to traits to fuel the results.

  12. well, are there any character description mechanics that really appeal to you? I love LB's Traits/Tags, for example, or SH's Traits plus simple stats. If you figure out what speaks to you it's just a matter of hooking that character data into the mechanic.

I wouldn't worry too much about monsters, at least at first! Though now that i think of it, you could use that as your starting point instead of the hero if it was more interesting to you! A minimal system that leverages, say, osr monsters would be very usable.

  13. Oh, sorry, didn't mean to ninja edit! One of my kids sent the post through when it was still in progress. The post I was referring to was just a kind of rambling overview of my design thoughts while building what would eventually end up as Calypso.
