Thanks for sharing this. As you probably saw from my first post to group, I too attempted to adventure into the dungeon. I really like how you explained everything with the details, as I saw something else I was doing wrong just from yours.
Well, that's one of the issues. I was in a one-on-one game (AD&D, playing through B2), and it was rough as hell for a single PC. I ended up creating a second PC and hiring on two henchmen, and it was still lethal. I'd love tog do a dungeon crawl solo, but I'm not sure if it's really even possible. For a solo PC to survive, you have to be cunning and clever, and that might be beyond the scope of most GM Emulators.
Todd Rokely "Scarlet Heroes" does more than just emulate a GM - it changes the way damage dice are read plus adds an additional type of damage die, all to balance out the math a little.
I've seen quite a few people survive solo dungeons with a lone Scarlet Hero. They definitely keep the threat level down to the recommended level.
I've played countless solo dungeons through the years (B/X, AD&D, and now LotFP). Lower level parties just need to go slowly and cautiously, as the OSR will chew up 1st level characters otherwise. Fortunately it's easy to make more.
I never really attempted a single adventurer in a dungeon unless they were about 4th level or so, and even then not unless they had a healing potion or two. I did once have a new 1st level Magic-User survive Ghost of Lion Castle -- but by that time the castle was a veritable graveyard of M-Us and elves.
"Scarlet Heroes" is a great little ruleset/ruleset modifier. I really enjoyed reading your report. For my own adventure into a Scarlet dungeon, check out my blog at http://aloneamongstmany.blogspot.com
Kelly L'Roy Thank you for posting up your adventure and also for sharing here as I now understand a few more things that I could have done different from both yours and Kyle Maxwell's sharing of Scarlet Heroes.

ReplyDeleteNow where did I leave that resurrection scroll.
Kevyn James I did read and enjoy yours. I liked how you did more narrative in your post, too!
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this and Kevyn James post, I'm starting to wonder if it's possible to do a solo dungeon crawl and make it work...
ReplyDeleteTodd Rokely It may be that SH needs some tweaks here, but then again OSR games are historically deadly at level 1...

ReplyDeleteWow! Sounds like a pretty tough adventure for one low level hero. Better luck next time.
