A new blog post in which I think I've had another breakthrough (or breakdown...you be the judge).

  1. I like sandbox style and also storytellig style of roleplaying, the good news is we can do both with solo rpgs. :-)

  2. MoonSylver , your thoughts about Traveller are spot on. If you want lots of aliens and robots and stuff, White Star is probably a better bet.

I'm a big fan of determining what the PC knows as things progress. I set up a fantasy sandbox a few months ago (before getting sidetracked by Traveller) where the main PC is a knight and member of the nobility. His family's ancestral castle and that of his squire's family are both on the hexmap -- unnamed. Their families are either very close or arch rivals, but I don't know which yet. I won't decide unless it either becomes necessary or I have a flash of inspiration. But this setup is laden with hooks and the PCs have a sense of where they are in the world, even if the world is still without form. I was thinking of playing a horror game for October, but I may have to dredge all this out now that I'm thinking about it...

Developing your setting as a consequence of play certainly helps you start gaming faster.
