Mothership is cool - it's like Alien / Aliens scifi, with 4 classes (Teamsters - think Ripley from Aliens), Androids (Ash / Bishop), Marines (Hudson, Hicks) and Scientists (drawing a blank here). The fully-featured classes have different saves (Insanity, Fear, Armor, Body) and different stats (Intellect, Strength, Speed, Combat) and some skills that add to rolls.

The rules include Mercenaries, so you take the normal more fully-featured classes and boil them down to 3-4 stats. Combat, Instinct (the catch-all non-combat stats and saves), Hits (your merc can take 1-3 hits), Loyalty (whether they do something good for the team in a stressful situation or good for themselves).

I'm going to have to try some All-Mercenary Party for a solo game. They're too perfect and expendable. The mercenaries' loyalty is great, I can roll that to let the 'PCs' surprise me with their PvP antics, which seems apt for the genre. Burke running away and sealing Ripley and co away from an escape route, Ash fucking everyone over, Bishop being the Best Artificial Person of all time. Hudson freaking out (though really this is more of an Instinct Save and Panic Roll), Hicks being cool as a cucumber. And the Mercenaries have skills, so one Instinct 30 merc can still be better than another at hacking computers or driving forklift exo-suits.

Anyway, I feel like this game has gotten some good press lately, and had thought of doing this and running mercenaries through awful space horror derelicts. Should be fun.

  1. The first supplement, Dead Planet has got some awesome random tables and a system for rolling up a unique ship to explore too.
