So, like many others, I've made a MeWe account and started checking things out over there. We have a group coming together, and having some of the features of several different social networks under one umbrella is neat.
But unless there's some way to let outsiders view our Solo RPG group there without making a MeWe account, it's fatally flawed. It's a tough sell to ask someone to make yet another social media account before they can even look at the group dynamic and see if it's worth managing another online presence.
I'd like to renew the appeal to migrate to Reddit. As another user said, we've found new blood there before as people discovered solo RPGs for the first time and got directed to G+. Staking a claim on Reddit would make drawing people in from that population even smoother.
Support or dissent welcome in the comments. Help me understand the pros and cons of moving to Reddit.
Edit: Convenient link for those unfamiliar with the existing subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Solo_Roleplaying/
I'd say that the best way to make your appeal is to start generating discussion on the Reddit group. Maybe copy a few posts that you liked in this group over on Reddit or start a new topic you like. In the end, it's the amount of activity and the content more than anything that will attract users. Once the network effects take place, it's hard to swim against that current, so this is your chance to influence how it goes!
ReplyDeleteAlex Yari Point Taken. I'll see if I can come up with something quality over the weekend. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI ended up making a MeWe account to just check it out, since I refuse to go back to the book of faces...
ReplyDeleteAs for reddit, I quite like it, but maybe I like the google groups slightly better. I'm good with either, though.
ReplyDeleteI have a bit of a learning curve with Reddit as far as setting up the group the way I like (category links, etc), but nothing I can't tackle.
I really really do not like MeWe or Facebook that much for this type of discussion. I'm already part of the RPG Design Network group on FB, for example, and I've not found much use for it. It feels like the noise is made worse.
If most people end up going to one of those types of social media, I might just relinquish ownership of the groups to Chris Stieha or whoever wants to suffer through that, lol.
BTW, I think Discord is definitely going to be the companion chat piece to whatever forum I end up being in personally.
Non public visibility is indeed a bad point for MeWe
ReplyDeleteI'm on the MeWe too and I'm not sure how much I like it either... I'd be willing to check out Reddit, probably will check out the app and start poking around there later
ReplyDeleteI will be more diligent about reddit. I just find it such a slog to keep up with. Not really any "community" feel. Maybe I've just been yelled at more times on reddit than anywhere else in my entire social media time. :D
ReplyDeleteSome Reddit groups do have a rough edge to them. Be sure that if our community takes off, I won't be very tolerant of keyboard warriors.
ReplyDeleteProbably just the mouth on me, you know? Someone on the internet might be wrong somewhere. Just have to dig my old account info out.
ReplyDeleteLong-time reddit user, shamefully, and can confirm that there are a bunch of arses on there. However, they do tend to stick to their own little corners of the stinkpile. If the community moves in quickly, the tone should be set, so to speak.
ReplyDeletethe most unfortunate thing would be to lose a small community like this that I have always found full of stimulating ideas and interesting people to share this particular hobby with. let's not disperse in the matrix :)
ReplyDeleteAlex Yari if you let me know where you are going I will follow you.
ReplyDeletePaul Drury My #1 choice would be the google group, with the Reddit group a close second. For chat, I think I'm sold on the discord server that Chris Stieha owns.
ReplyDeleteIn the end, I'll probably go where the action is...stay tuned.
I am in google group and I joined reddit, enough for now :)
ReplyDeleteI joined the google group last night and re-signed up for reddit just a bit ago.
ReplyDeleteI had signed up for reddit when the Mythic group started there but forgot my username. (I was frustrated after multiple rejections so I just banged a bunch of keys and then was accepted, but I never recorded that "name" and must have erased the confirmation mail)
Doh!
Anyhow, it is early on in this adventure and there could be a random event or plot twist that will head us along a good path before the last scene plays here.
(Just don't let me roll those dice!)
Alex Yari im for your google groups and chris' discord. i love discord. cya around alex!
ReplyDeleteronald v & Todd Mauldin Cool!
ReplyDeleteI already have a reddit account (there are a few corners of Reddit that are quite decent) so I've subbed to the group there. Do you have a link to the Google group?
