Current reading list... Voice, the secret power of great writing by James Scott Bell Conflict & Suspense by James Scott Bell Writing Monsters by Philip Athans
Why? Because becoming a better writer makes me a better gamer. :-)
Being rather new to writing and recently returning to RPGs, I'm sort of trying to improve writing and using RPGs as a catalyst.
I have Writing Monsters on my to get list. I have my notes from Athans The Guide to Writing Fantasy and Science Fiction which is somewhat helpful. I'm curious about how much WM helps out with making monsters. I'm curious if he expands monsters beyond mentioning that they a) fulfill a need in the story, b) and to change the monster to be uniquely your own.
Bell's stuff I've only used his Revision And Self-Editing which seems to be a summary of most of his work. I found it very informative and helpful. His conflict & tension section in it only covered the structure, source, and catalysts. A preview of conflict & Suspense book looks like it goes into much more detail.
I'm doing it the other way around: solo gaming to feed my writing.
ReplyDeleteThe two are definitely symbiotic, and helping one helps the other.

Hope they help out.
I'm enjoying it. Here's the table of Contents and some preview pages for WM if that will help.
