Social/Solo Hybrid Gaming

Social/Solo Hybrid Gaming

This is not about the Human Oracle, but rather about play by post games that use the usual Oracles. I've seen some attempts at this in the Mythic Role Playing group over at Yahoo, but that one was a long time ago.

There was also a similar attempt not that long ago by Chris Stieha and a small group of us, though the intent was a bit different (Chris can explain if anyone is curious).

The most recent one I happened to chance upon was this game over at RPGNet by roryb bracebuckle (I think) and another person:

I haven't read much of it yet, but the point is that the idea of playing a semi-social game where, perhaps, most of the time you're playing solo with an Oracle, yet also interacting with a shared world appeals to me.

I imagine a game where events that happen in one player's session could influence the other players' conception of the fictional setting and the direction their own adventures take.

The main issue would probably be making sure everyone is on the same page somehow, and doing it in an effective way.

Anyway, the reason this is an "Admin Announcement" is that I'm considering either adding a sub section here at Lone Wolf for people to link to actual plays of this type and otherwise discuss this type of asynchronous, oracle driven social play.

I understand, it's better using an oracle without saying anything to the players, they hear dices rolling behind a screen and they are happy. ;-)

  2. lino pang It's fascinating, you'd think it wouldn't matter so much! I thought they would enjoy the process and maybe start participating in the creation but it was totally obvious very quickly they were very uncomfortable with it.

They were absolutely willing to try, they're a good group, but it was just not engaging to them. Our usual GM is heavily illusionist and it works for him and the group. I guess I'm just kind of disillusioned (ha).

+Alex Yari Will do! Resisting the urge to revise right now. Also working on a new thing around Trollbabe/Stranger Things. I feel lucky to be discovering story games now when there's so much great discussion about it available to read!

  3. Alto Dizi in Mythic GME are mentioned various ways to use a solo rpg:
1)"no GM, multiple players"= collaborative, Fiasco style
    2) "no GM, one player"= standard solo rpg
    3) "one GM, many players"= standard group rpg but with a GM with this tool to (secretely if you like) improvise the story
