[TL:DR I'm looking for a solo friendly, character driven skirmish rule set. Do any of you fine gamers have suggestions?]
I need some suggestions from the other solo wargamers here. I'm currently working on a solo skirmish campaign. I'm in the world building phase, which is usually the longest part of any solo wargame campaign for me.
My focus so far is on UBER BRAWL , the #1 spectator blood sport of the multiverse. Currently I'm fleshing out back stories for the various sponsored teams.
The part I need help with is choosing a rule set. Song of Blades and Heroes (and the new Advanced) have been my go to system for the last year. I'm a little burnt out on it now. I've considered using Savage Worlds, since it's RPG aspects would allow for a unique character driven campaign. I also picked up In Her Majesty's Name recently, so it's sitting there mocking me. Are there any other skirmish rule sets I should consider?

ReplyDeleteMythic, Scarlet Heroes or Risus, in order from complex to simple
ReplyDeleteWhat the previous posters said, plus Avalon solo Pathfinder system and Battlesworn from the same maker of the Songs games.
ReplyDeleteCan you share how you solo skirmished with Song of Blades and Heroes?
ReplyDeleteRed Sand, Black Moon by Two Hour Wargames is about fantasy gladiatorial combat. May be worth a look.
ReplyDeleteJohn Fiore I always meant to track down a copy, and never have. I may have to make it a priority.
ReplyDeleteChris Stieha my SBH solo is a modification of the old stand by in which you simply play both sides to the best of your ability. The basic system I use came from this blog post: https://dogui.wordpress.com/2010/10/21/solitaire-song-of-blades-and-heroes/ with the addition of adding opposing general's proclivities suggested in the post's comments. In addition to that I've found that as long as I give both forces clear strategic goals prior to beginning the game, it goes a long way to keeping the fight fair. In general I've enjoyed solo SBH quite a bit, and I'm only looking for a new system due to having played it so regularly for the last year.
Thanks! I really need to try some solo wargaming.
ReplyDeleteone of the solo tabletop wargame bloggers have been playing 'five parsecs from home' almost exclusively and blogging about it... I'll see if I can find it.
ReplyDeleteOne of my pipe dreams is to solo wargame Necromunda, but haven't got around to it.
I should have googled for 5 seconds before hitting 'post comments'.

Two Hour Games has several freebies that would fit. The 2d6 series says it is solo/co-op.

Two Hour War-games is my go to for solo wargaming.
ReplyDeleteI believe Warmachine is character driven skirmish wargaming, haven't tried it myself yet, but keep intending to. I have a long list of 'To Play' games! :)
ReplyDeleteWarmachine is character or hero-driven, but the characters aren't dynamic and I don't believe there is a story mode to play. It's pretty much war hammer 40k but steampunk. I used to play it quite a bit, it's a good system for tabletop war games.
