A long long time ago (we are talking ten years), in a game far away, I had a software that generated a dungeon as you go. It was a lot like the ios random dungeon generator, but I think it was 3D. It was definitely a solo dungeon generator.
Anyone heard or seen anything like this?
Do you mean 3D as in 3D graphics, or "3D" as in first person? if the latter, I think that Bethseda's Arena, or one of their games prior to Morrowind, did this.
ReplyDeleteFor the former, here's a google search: https://www.google.com/#q=procedurally+generated+dungeon+3d
I"d be interested if you find a hit with the generator you're talking about.
BTW, it was Daggerfall that I meant: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elder_Scrolls_II:_Daggerfall
ReplyDeleteNo it was not a traditional game at all, it seeded the dungeon and you could explore it. I meant 3D point of view.
ReplyDeleteCan you supply more information? Do you remember what operating system? Did you fight in it or only explore? What did it look like visually, both stylistically and resolution?

Around that same time is dungeon hack:

Looking forward to what is dug up. (And wondering if reviving such a project would be fun to do...)
ReplyDeleteNo I am sure it was not DOS, any thoughts on the word to search for? It was a full screen- windows, not sure if you had to physically roll or on-screen. Anywhere from 1999 to 2005 Id say.
ReplyDeleteTodd Zircher oh yes, revive, make it so!
ReplyDelete(Adds to to-do list) I have some other projects that I'm working on, but this sounds like something to research for sure. And more clues to offer? 'Realistic', retro pixelated, vector, etc? There are so many near misses to choose from.
ReplyDeleteThat type of 3D game would be interesting to me if it was similar to a 3D version of RPG Maker, where rules could be somewhat easily customizable.
ReplyDeleteI'm curious as to what features people think would be a useful tool. As a general guideline, I prefer rules agnostic utilities. If it is geometry only, that's a not a problem. If people wanted a dungeon with encounters, a generic system might be the way to go. Think index cards like NPC, trap, wandering monster, or boss battle. Thoughts?

ReplyDeletebard's tale construction kit?
ReplyDeleteMaybe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_roguelikes would have it?
ReplyDeleteTodd Zircher My first thought was something like Heroine Dusk (https://github.com/clintbellanger/heroine-dusk), but randomly generated. For encounters, personally I'd prefer a scarlet heroes style 'feature' generation -- you walk into a space, and maybe get a pop-up if there's an encounter, hazard, or feature, but it's up to you to roll those up separately. That's how I do my 2D crawls, anyway! Ps, doesn't looking at those old game screens just make you want to make something? Hahaha, maybe it's just me!
