People, Last week I found this amazing game called "Randori", by Todd Mauldn. I loved the idea of building my own "Choose Your Own Adventure" story. So, here it is a short actual play, just the prologue of a long adventure. I probably won't post more about this adventure ( I am too lazy for that...). I am posting this beggining just to give an idea about how nice it is this game!

I saw some of the discussion surrounding the new Story Cube game's release, but I'm not sure it's a good buy for my solo gaming needs. I do own 3 sets of Story Cubes, and I've used them in the past to do a kind of freeform world building with my RPG group. Does anyone know of a more structured way to use the Story Cubes for solo gaming, or is it best as a purely freeform oracle?

Putting it in off topic because I'm half joking, but here's a Giallo title generator. I might eventually find a way to use it as inspiration for solo gaming.

Hi. I'm new here, and to solo gaming. I've been having a ton of fun playing Labyrinth Lord with the Scarlet Heroes free hacks and the Mythic GME. They work like a charm. I then buckled down and got the full version of Scarlet Heroes. I tried out an "urban adventure" last night. While it was okay, I found the constant flipping pages and setting up scenes quite a burden. They seemed to take longer to set up than the scenes themselves did do play out. Any tips/advice to smoothing this out? Perhaps it was just clunky because it was my first time?

They use Mythic, and D&D 5e in digital format. It's actually quite interesting.

Took a bit longer to write than I wanted, so this may have disrupted Solo a Module Month. All in all, FU Untold (yeesh, that sounds horrible) wasn't too bad. I think if I get better at framing questions, it'll run more smoothly.

Having finished Larry Niven's "The Draco Tavern", I'm thinking of starting a solo series based more in a fantasy setting but with a similar idea: the PC would be either the manager or proprietor of a tavern/inn in a "hub" city, and the stories would result from things overheard while adventurers dine in the tavern. I'm not sure if the PC would actually go out on adventures; likely not, as I'm leaning more toward having the PC "manage" adventures for NPC groups.

I'm trying to decide on a system to start with. This feels like a PbtA or Fate Accelerated type of game on the "crunchy" end, but as I don't have much experience with those (Fate, some, but not AW/DW), I'm open to suggestions. I had thought my next game would be Ironsworn, but this doesn't feel like a good match for that system (my idea seems more story driven, less confrontational, than what Ironsword was created for).

Thoughts? My only other experience which might match this nicely would be Mouse Guard... {shrug} Too many options in my hands, and too many ideas knocking around in my head! :D

I made something similar in LaTeX. The idea's you print it out, fold it into a pocketmod, and then use it as an "unexpected number generator", ie, dice.

There are 8 d4 tables, 30 d6 tables, and 10 d10 tables, along with instructions on using it to "roll" d8s, d12s, and d20s. There are also a couple of simple Writer's Dice inspired d6 tables so you can get an oracle qualifier on the fly.

You're the last human on earth. Congratulations, you made it!

Your only reprieve from the melancholy and madness are tabletop role-playing games. Games that you could only play, obviously, by yourself. If you could only pick one system for your go to mechanics, which would you pick and why?

Hi all, I'm looking for random tables on finding and reaching objectives. I made one, but I thought maybe I could share it and see if anyone can help improve it or has better ideas. Here it is:

Hi all, I'm looking for random tables on finding and reaching objectives. I made one, but I thought maybe I could share it and see if anyone can help improve it or has better ideas. Here it is:

1. When you pick up a random quest, you are given a magical compass, dog, a guiding light, or whatever to find the objective in a quest (for example, finding a treasure or a missing person.) First, roll the difficulty table below for how many points to accumulate in a dungeon to explore rooms before reaching the destination.

Objective Difficulty:

1-3. 10 Points
4-5. 15 Points
6. 20 Points

2. Following from the above difficulty, roll the table below to accumulate points as you enter each room in a dungeon. (Note: Going back in old areas do not yield anything from the list, meaning they are already explored. But you can go back and find new paths to continue the search.)

1. Nothing (0 pts)
2-3. Lost the trail (-1 pts)
4. Faintly on the right track (1 pts)
5-6. On the right track! (2 pts)

3. When you have reached the objective, resolve the situation in your own way (such as defeating a boss, picking up the treasure or rescuing a hostage.) That's it.

You could alternatively make tables using different dices with more results, but this is the most simple one I've come up with so far.

Good news from beyond the grave! My spoopy 2-player 1-shot storytelling game, Dead Friend: A Game of Necromancy, is now available as pay-what-you-want on DriveThruRPG. You each play the role of a friend, one living and one dead. The script follows the dramatic structure of a necromancy ritual, and you use Tarot cards (or regular cards) to randomize story prompts. Enjoy!

Keep on the Shadowfell - Meet the crew

The cast of my solo Keep on the Shadowfell adventure.

Hi, everyone. I've been hanging around this group for a while, but never solo played. I love using oracles and randomization, though, so I've picked up some great stuff from posts here. I'm my regular group's Forever DM, but even so, I have dozens of unplayed games just sitting on my shelf, calling to me (somehow I manage to move to another part of the country just when I've flushed the D&D craving from my current group, go figure).

So now I've decided to go ahead and start playing through my collection, starting with Night's Black Agents. This might be a bit difficult to start with, seeing as it's supposed to be a complex conspiracy uncovered one clue at a time, and vampires are supposed to be slightly different in each game. Does anyone here have experience with Night's Black Agents or Gumshoe games? Any ideas for randomizing the nature of my foes and making it a surprise during play? Thanks for all the excellent posts. Glad to be jumping in!

I'm having a tired brain moment (at least it's Friday)... In a home brew fantasy campaign, I use the following method to determine attack success: Attacker rolls d20, adds attack modifiers (from weapons, etc.), and compares the result against the opponent's Defense Rating (think Armor Class). If the modified roll is greater than the Defense Rating, it's a hit. Where did I get this? What other systems use this? And is it a sound method? I run a rules light, table-based solo system and it seems to work, but I would love to hear your thoughts.

Does anyone know where one can find a comprehensive list of conditions, as used in such games as FU-Freeform Universal, and other games that use conditions to determine damage and whatnot?

Back with another Kickstarter heads up, this time for A Dead Man's Guide to Dragongrin.

Back with another Kickstarter heads up, this time for A Dead Man's Guide to Dragongrin.

It's from the same team that created Oath of the Frozen King (which I posted about some months ago). I received my PDF and print copy of Oath and couldn't be more pleased with the end product so Dragongrin was an insta-back.

These types of books are for those that like to solo with scenarios/sandboxes while having random tables providing surprise, inspiration, and support.

Just like with Oath, Dragongrin touts it's compatibility with D&D 5E but if Oath is any kind of indicator the amount of 5E specific mechanics in Dragongrin could be just as minimal as they were in Oath. (I never planned on using Oath with D&D and I never have too).

Hello!

Hello!

While I am preparing my characters for my entry for the solo a module month, there was something I was wondering about.

Has anyone considered writing a module to solo themselves? What I mean is, first you design an adventure the way you as the DM would do for your multiplayer RPG group. Then, instead inviting friends over, you sit down and solo it as you would with a purchased module.

While it seems like a lot of work, it also sounds interesting, as designing situations/adventures is something that is real fun in my experience.

Do you have any experience or thoughts on this?

Yours,
Deathworks

I've been busy, so gaming of all varieties has been a bit slow. That has not stopped me from daydreaming and turning over ideas. Once of my new projects is to greatly simplify the tools I need on hand hand to feel comfortable. Right now I'm working out how much mileage I can get out of a deck of cards. Which lead me to a new oracle, both in our terminology and the more esoteric variety.

Once of my new projects is to greatly simplify the tools I need on hand hand to feel comfortable. Right now I'm working out how much mileage I can get out of a deck of cards. Which lead me to a new oracle, both in our terminology and the more esoteric variety.

The intent, based off what I've found online, was Cartomancy (divination) with playing cards. However, after looking over this chart I think that It might have a lot to offer a solo player.

In addition to the Oracle, I'm looking into various rule sets that use Card resolution and conversions of others that don't. My hope is that in time I can play just as comfortably with a single deck of playing cards as I do currently with a my wide array.

If anyone has any leads, ideas, or experiences with playing card oracles or game mechanics I'd love to hear about them.

Session 3 of Keep on the Shadowfell. The party heads out toward the burial site and is ambushed. This is a scripted encounter and I ran it as written. Actually I don't mind running the encounters as described. The variation comes through the things that are added as I consult my oracle for certain facts or actions.

Doom of Daggerdale

Doom of Daggerdale

Solo a Module Month was just announced on the Lonewolf Solo G+ community. What to do? I don’t have a huge repository of modules, but I have some. I’ve been thinking about Wolfgang Bauer’s Doom of Daggerdale, which is an old one I’ve had that I know pretty well. It also fits a setting that know well, so that helps.

Two questions to answer:
How does one play a module solo?
What tools/gizmos/rules will I use to attempt this? #Solo-a-Module

Problem? I don't have a problem.

Session 2 of Keep on the Shadowfell solo. This was just a random encounter created by the GM Emulator I use. As expected by her stats Inara is a serious underperformer. As you can see I run the combats on a sketchmap drawn in ink and use light pencilmarks to update positions. I really like this method: Almost no set up time, no tokens or minis to sort out and it gives me a good and vivid picture of the situation at all times. For grid based tactical combat I would just use gridded paper.
