Help needed!

Help needed!
Ray Otus wants to do a hangout for his patreon and has invited me. http://www.patreon.com/rayotus

"The subject would be playing Dungeon World in solo mode (bad idea? what tweaks does it need? how do specific things like monster moves work in solo play? Etc.) Also solo play in general. I have questions about director vs. protagonist viewpoints, solo or party characters, best GM emulators, and so on."

What would you want to see discussed?
Perhaps we can win more solo gamers with this, so what should I address?

  1. John Fiore hit it pretty well on the head. I'm not sure how much Ray Otus already knows about Solo gaming, but given the resources already out there, I'd hate to see him spend his time reinventing the wheel. Though, of course, fresh perspectives are always a good thing.

Do you know what his questions actually are? I personally don't play Dungeon World, and I'm not interested in signing up for (any more) patreons, but I'm sure a number of us would be willing to share our experiences. He could do something simple like a google survey or something, if he's willing to expand the discussion to non-patrons with minimal work.

  2. Hey guys, yeah I have done a good bit solo gaming already, but with OSR rules sets, not DW. I really haven't even thought much about what it would take to use that system as a solo, but I will do so before the conversation. I invited Sophia Brandt to do a public Hangout with me just to have a fun, friendly discussion about solo gaming for the solo-curious. The audience will be readers of my DW zine. It's a patron benefit, though if it goes well I'll leave a recording out there for anyone to view. Maybe that helps put the question in context. We will probably talk about some general ideas related to solo gaming and then transition into how to handle/tweak the DW mechanics in solo play.

  3. Sounds awesome, and would love to help you out. Mainly because I'd love to see a bit wider knowledge of Solo Gaming, since it seems like something a lot of players would benefit from.

I really hope the discussion goes well. Good luck!

  4. Sophia Brandt As far as DW specific issues:

    - Explain that a lot of details usually filled in by other players can be handled by random generators (may need to address the art of interpreting results).

    - Monster moves can be driven by oracle questions or weighted randomization ala Miso Solo style die assignments ;)

    - DW's bent towards sandbox play is going to make the transition to solo easier IMHO. In that same vein special care might be needed to let the "PC(s)" retreat and regroup if high legality/failure is not desired. That means less "GM" prep in trying to "scale" everything to make it plausible on first attempts but letting creative "PC" planning and solutions make up the difference for not having a full party, etc.

Very curious to see what you would present as the "best" GM emulators (versus most popular, simple, etc).
