I’ve been reading Burning Empires over the past couple days, which is the SF version of a fantasy system called Burning Wheel. It’s very crunchy, but has some neat concepts which make me curious how playable it might be as a solo exercise.
The general Internet doesn’t seem to think it’s a great fit. The GM is apparently responsible for challenging PC beliefs, and there are some subsystems for combat (physical and social), which use hidden information.
But I’m really intrigued by, among other things, the life path character creation system, and setting generation. Does anybody have experience with any of the BW games solo? If so, how’d that work out?

Alex Yari Thanks. :) I found that useful. I hate Yahoo Groups interface, but that's another story.
ReplyDeleteSomething else I was thinking might be useful would be PC emulation. I think I originally read this on the Risus Monkey blog—I'm not sure who owns that or I'd mention them in here directly.
Burning Empires seems unsuited to a single PC, which is why it's difficult to contemplate solo. BW would be better, but I can't find that in PDF anywhere, legally at least. Hardcopy doesn't work with my screen reader, obviously. :)
At any rate, this *should* be possible, the question is do I want to put in the effort? I'm not sure yet.
Aleksandar Battreps has gone the PC emulation route before, with the game called Microscope if I'm not mistaken. He might be able to talk shop with you in that regard :)
ReplyDeleteI tried Mouse Guard solo. It wasn't a great experience. However, I'm not too fond of the system altogether, so I wouldn't play it again. I don't like the combat system. http://dieheart.net/ap-mouse-guard/
