Greetings all! Meandered my way through the interwebz this afternoon while trying to view a document from a blog. I've been RPGing for about five years now (I know, I got started late) both as GM and Player almost exclusively in a play-by-post format. Because I don't always have a game going, or because I'm being a Patient Person and waiting for someone else to post, and because I live in the town next to the Middle Of Nowhere, I often have resorted to using Mythic GME and similar resources to just game on my own. Thanks for existing, and Happy Gaming! :)

Welcome! I hope you enjoy your stay.
ReplyDeleteThanks! It's funny - only recently was I having a discussion with someone where I realized how many folks out there game more or less by themselves. I feel like what I do is basically just a variation on creative writing where even I don't quite know what happens next, but it's always fun -and that's, like, the cardinal rule of gaming anyway. ;)
ReplyDeleteThis may not apply to people who don't write stuff down, but I've more or less accepted that solo RP is closer to creative writing in the same way that GM prep is. I think it is, in a sense, GM'ing-- at least the way I've practiced it. When I took a creative writing, I was struck by how similar it felt to the daydreaming I did as a kid, so maybe that's all it is. :)
ReplyDeleteI've started to wonder, though, whether solo gaming a lot can help someone become a better GM, and how much. If you stick to one RPG system, you will probably come to master its rules. You'll also have a lot of practice with adapting to off the cuff vague input, so maybe that will help in some way with being able to handle the surprises that players or dice throw at you.
