This is a Tabijin update with a poll. I'm asking you guys since it's about a solo RPG product.
Tabijin is designed to support group and solo play. The solo element is going to feature random tables so you can play random adventures every session instead of following the same book over and over again, and it's going to have minimal bookkeeping. It's also going to include some pre-made settings with less-random but not-quite-linear systems.
I've decided to work on and release one of the settings for playtest, to see how it gets received. Tabijin's going to have several settings included, and I'm not sure which of these I'm going to put out first, so you get to help me decide.
Do you want:
1. A Million Steps in Silence? This setting features a more-or-less Stone Age-level society that gets menaced by an enormous beast. Your task is to track it down and kill it. Do you have the resolve to travel so far from your home? Will you stand against the titan and avenge what you've lost?
One-sentence synopsis: Picture Shadow of the Colossus set in the Arctic.
2. Freebooters of the Bleeding Void? A far-future setting where the PC is a scheming liberator seeking to make a name for themselves. They travel to an oppressed world and attempt to overthrow the government and replace it with one of their own design. Will you rouse the rabble into a fearsome army? Do you have what it takes to found a dynasty?
One-sentence synopsis: Farscape/Guardians of the Galaxy meets James I of Sarawak.
3. Corsairs of Helios. A steam-powered world offers wealth, excitement and romance to the boldest adventurers. Take to the skies with your fantastical ship and fight strange creatures, power-crazed despots and mad scientists. Will you find your way as a pirate and trader? Can you become the Scourge of the Sky?
One-sentence synopsis: Pirates of the Caribbean meets the Leviathan Trilogy.
There are more settings that I'm designing, but they're either too embryonic to consider at this stage (such as the setting where you play as a cloud), or too large to do in a timely manner (such as the setting where you fight history's greatest tyrants).
So what do you all think? Which setting would you like to see me do? Please make sure to leave a comment with your vote. If there's something you'd like to see instead, please still vote but leave a comment about what you'd like to see.
Cool. So it looks like most of the regulars have voted. I'll finish A Million Steps in Silence first, and then Freebooters of the Bleeding Void. I already had more done for AMiSS than I did for Void. Also, that acronym is totally unintentional.
ReplyDeleteOkay. Big update. I wrote my last comment when AMiSS and FBV were tied. I'll get them done in the order you guys want. Here's the thing: I've been inspired in a very big way. I'm going have to put the above settings on hold until I get this other project done or I will go mad.
ReplyDeleteThe new setting is going to be a very old-school sci-fantasy inspired by my favorite authors, poets and artists. A trip through the solar system. The initial book is going to focus on the Moon and Mars. I'll use that as the playtest before I expand upon it.
This setting, like all the settings, is going to use a custom version of the Tabijin rules. Tabijin in its tabula rasa state is almost freeform, with most things being as abstract as Fate systems, wtith guides on how you might go about converting Assets into Arrays that simulate classes, complex vehicles, special abilities and so forth.
This game, name TBD, is going to have a variable story, with random encounters. You'll be able to skim the surface with fast enemy creation or use some tables to add further detail.
I can't tell you how excited I am by this setting. More to come.
The old school sci-fantasy project has piqued my curiosity. Can you reveal any more about it?
ReplyDeleteBy old-school I mean old-school. I am about to reprint an old sci-fantasy book from the 20s. It is very whimsical and gorgeously illustrated, but the initial print run was one 2,000 copies. Anyway, the new setting is inspired somewhat by the aesthetics of that book, but not the specifics. In the new setting you play a young orphan girl who gets whisked away to the moon. The initial playtest release is going to be a proof-of-concept with an introductory tutorial and a city section with non-linear play. The full version is going to feature additional areas with Kaguya-hime, Nyarlathotep, the Selenites and more. If the book is successful I am going to have it continue on Mars, and then on Mercury, where you meet William Blake's Zoas. I have ideas for a visit to the outer solar system, too.
