A tiny solo game I wrote. Hopefully of some interest here :-)

And here is Wicked Blades of the Blood Forest, my submission for the 200 words RPG challenge!

The short format gave me the courage to put together my first game and I learned so much by doing it!

My main inspirations were In a Wicked Age, Blades in the Dark, The Quiet Year.

  1. Looks good. I hope when the contest is over you will expand on your creation.

  2. I love minimalist systems...a lot to think about here. You might remain deliberately vague about some of your aspects...like Spotlight. Cool stuff!

  3. The short format of the challenge forced me to not explain some things.. so I tried to play on it and turn the vagueness into something useful :)

  4. I think that the spotlight system is all kinds of awesome. It forces you to take on other POVs. I think that can feed future framing of scenes for conflict with this character you were just playing during the last scene.

Love the way characters are removed. It reminds me vaguely of Remember Tomorrow, though the process is different.

Also love the end game condition there. I think solo games can benefit from end game conditions.

Would love for you to expand on these elements: "Use maps, cards, notes and progress clocks
liberally", though I guess we can just buy Blades In The Dark. :)

I lost count on how many times I used the word "love" in this post.

  5. Thank you Alex Yari , your comments are so encouraging!
I think a lot about solo systems and I worked very hard to distill this down to this form, while trying leaving the right empty spaces for fruitful interpretation and ambiguity.

Ideally I would like to produce some kind of principled daydreaming, with enough structure to push me towards interesting choices and enough randomness to force me to come up with creative solutions and twists.

My inspiration are Blades in the Dark, Remember Tomorrow (I considered to have Ready Willing and Able for a moment but the 200 words count killed them off), The Quiet Year and first of them all In a Wicked Age.

It still has many practical problems to work as I would like, but since you have shown interest, I will work on it during the summer.

Thanks again for the kind words.

  6. Please do! I think this would be a great addition to the solo gaming toolbox.
