I've been using Zach Best 's CRGE (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/145426/CRGE-Conjectural-Roleplaying-GM-Emulator). In it, there is the Loom of Fate, an oracle to give answers to yes or no questions. The Loom of Fate has standard responses (Yes, Yes and, Yes but, No, No and, and No but) and also the unique response Yes/No and unexpectedly..., which modifies "the answer, the scene, or the whole game" (Zach's words). Zach gives almost 20 examples for the and unexpectedly response.
Some examples (from CRGE and me):
Enter Stage Left: someone new enters the scene
Exit Stage Right: someone immediately leaves the scene
Chekhov's gun: an object or event in a previous scene becomes important to this scene
Chekhov's gun (take 2): everything in the scene applies to the current topic/plot (or thread in CRGE).
I want to leverage the community to produce more, with a title and a description of what happens.
I want to compile these as a list and make them available for download under some license, like CC-BY (thoughts?), mainly so that we (Lone Wolf Roleplaying g+ group) get credit for producing it, but do not limit its use in other products. I would include everyone's name that participated. Along these lines, I think it would be great for the group to create a set of tools that people could use, such as random tables and plot devices.

Character Intensive Unexpectedlies:
ReplyDeleteUnto Expertise - A problem arises from the current thread that is directed at the character's favored ability.
Over My Head - A problem arises from the current thread that is directed at the character's weakest attribute.
Whose Side Are You On? - The character's closest ally, touchstone, contact, etc. complicates the current thread (but is not necessarily present in the scene).
A Friend in Need... - The character's closest ally, touchstone, contact, etc. becomes a catalyst for resolving the current thread in a positive manner.
Vault Cracked - Something with the current thread threatens a personal resource of the character.
Power Vacuum - Something with the current thread threatens a "power" resource of the character (memorized spells, magic points, blood points, etc.).
Groundswell - Like Limelit, but focused on amplifying the character's nature or powers, often with collateral, unintended effects or consequences.
Just to publicize our email conversation, you (all) of course have my blessing in doing this. I will be happy to host, and publish as I can (not sure if DTRPG will host CC-BY). I would ask if there is a comprehensive table including the original Unexpectedlies, that the original Unexpectedlies only refer to original CRGE without explaining, e.g., what Limelit does.
ReplyDeleteCompounding Unexpectedlies
ReplyDeleteIf an Unexpectedly has been rolled in this scene, roll a d6. On a roll of a 6 or 5-6, the Unexpectedly compounds.
Enemy of my Enemy... - if Entering the Red was previously rolled, a third party not necessarily allied to the character arrives to further complicate matters.
Too Good - If Limelit was previously rolled, things start looking up for the characters to a degree where there has to be a catch involved.
Without A Paddle - If Over My Head was previously rolled, the problem becomes such that the success or failure of the problem lies directly in the character's actions.
