Hi everyone. I don't think I posted this here yet. I feel Storium is very similar to solo rpg, but you do have other players and a narrator posting back and forth. On the Yahoo group, someone else posted that you can use this to do solo roleplaying by using two accounts for yourself--one as the narrator and another as the player. But on top of all that, I feel it gives me a lot more motivation to play when I'm not in the mood for solo roleplaying because everything is packaged into a single easy to use rules lite game.

  1. Microscope RPG is much better for that and for several reasons.
First, it is not internet connected. You set as much "accounts" as you want (usually 3) in your head and all interchanging happens on the paper, and we do not want to have PC around when we play, do we?

Also  Microscope non-linearity adds something special to the story.

  2. Hi Aleks, thanks for the reply. I looked at the Microscope RPG a little bit and it just seemed like a world/history builder to me. I guess that would be fine if you want to create your own epic Middle Earth or something similar, but most people would just want to play a smaller scoped game IMO. Is there an actual play of someone doing a typical D&D style adventure or campaign?

  3. Great, thanks for the info. I'll check out your blog.

I also listened to Minions of the Monster Masher podcast ep 38/29 Microscope actual play, but they did the whole world building thing and only did one scene of roleplaying for the entire 3 hours.

As for Storium, it's more similar to FU rpg and Lady Blackbird, but players play strength/weakness cards for their "aspects," and no dice rolls are involved. It's quite an elegant system that's backed by people such as the creators of Dungeon World and writers such as Scott Siggler. It's in beta atm, and is mostly for two or more players, but it's great if you don't want to play by yourself since you can join multiple games and just post a couple times a week without stressing out about playing both the GM and player. It gives a nice break from solo rpgs IMO.

  4. The idea is nice, though, it might be worth stealing if you can implement it as a crude pnp (not automated) mechanic for yourself. Come to think of it, I think +John fiore 's World vs Hero concept might take you most of the way there, if you don't mind doing a little bit of content building yourself.

  5. Hi Sophia. If you don't build your own pnp version as Alex stated, I believe you can "game" the system. Playing 3 full games for free lasts quite a long time. I've been in 2 games since April and only one is wrapping up now (we post to that daily the other once we only post once or twice a week).

The way it works is that the narrator/gm invites other members to play. Anyone can be invited by just sending an invite to any email. So basically the workaround is to just use a new email address for invitees when you go beyond 3 games. In fact, you can probably just use the gmail alias trick (username+random@gmail.com). Personally, I think the $25/year is worth it for one account.
