I'm curious how you all deal with NPC choice. Especially in combat situations, where knowing what the NPC is going to do can have a big impact on what the best action for your character is.

  1. Generally I just ask the oracle a yes/no question that fits logically with what the NPC is about or might be about. In particular, I use the oracle if I can't be more than 80% sure "this is what this NPC might do" or if I want unpredictability.

    Otherwise I just rule that the NPC does the most logical thing his type would do. Kills surprise but flows smoother.

    Now, for combat, you might want to take a page from wargamers and create or lift a combat AI from somewhere. John Fiore has a few posts on combat AIs you might find useful.
